Endodontics

What is endodontics?

Endodontics, or endodontic treatment of a tooth, is the term for the treatment of the root canal (nerve) system. The goal of endodontics is to eliminate pain and preserve tooth tissue. Modern endodontic treatment is relatively painless and effective.

What is the procedure of a endodontic treatment?

Endodontics has 3 important aspects that must be met to achieve maximum treatment success:

  1. Treatment, expansion, disinfection and subsequent hermetic filling of the root canal to prevent the penetration and establishment of microorganisms.
  2. Visualization – here we use the operating microscope as much as possible. What we see, we can also treat. Some root canal entrances are invisible to the eye and, if left untreated, can cause the entire endodontic treatment to fail.
  3. Kofferdam – isolation of the treated tooth from the surrounding oral cavity. It ensures that there is no subsequent contamination with saliva and endodontic treatment failure.

When is root canal treatment needed?

Root canal treatment is performed in the following basic indications:
Endodontics CDC dental clinic Prague

  • Tooth pain where the nerve of the tooth has been irreversibly damaged – either by decay, trauma or a periodontally affected tooth.
  • Insufficient previous treatment of the tooth. Mostly with signs of chronic infection in the surrounding bone
  • Gangrene of the tooth – when there is a gradual decay of the tooth pulp as a result of an accident, caries or prosthetic work. Usually accompanied by the development of inflammation at the tip of the root of the tooth, accompanied by a fistula through which pus is discharged through the mucous membrane around the tip of the root of the affected tooth.
  • Further, for more extensive prosthetic work, if there is a high risk of damage to the dental pulp by preparation.

High-quality endodontic treatment makes it possible to preserve teeth in the oral cavity that would otherwise have to be extracted. The endodontic treatment must be followed by crown reconstruction, which is called post-endodontic treatment, and depending on the extent of destruction of the clinical crown we indicate the following for the treated tooth: composite filling, overlay/inlay or crown.
