Restorative dentistry

Restorative dentistry deals with the treatment of caries and their subsequent complications. Complications include mainly infection of the root canal (tooth nerve) – see endodontic treatment.

Caries are infectious disease that arises from improper or inadequate oral hygiene. Plaque builds up on the enamel surface of the tooth, which contains large amounts of bacteria that can ‘dissolve’ the enamel and then progress very quickly through the dentin (tooth enamel). If plaque is removed regularly, caries do not occur.

As long as caries do not damage the dental pulp, we make a photocomposite (white) filling, which is highly aesthetic and, if properly made and following the principles of construction, such a filling is very high quality and stable with a very long life.

It is always our priority to preserve as much tooth tissue as possible and make a long lasting restoration. In cases where it is not possible to fabricate a high quality composite filling, we resort to treatment using indirect work fabricated in the laboratory – see Prosthodontics.
